ASEAN+3 Societies in Action (ASIA) in Victoria is bringing together Asian community groups in the region with two goals in mind:

  1. To build the capacity of individual groups so that they are better able to meet the needs of their community members

  2. Create intercultural connections between Asian community groups and between Asian and non-Asian members of our community.

ASEAN+3 Societies in Action (ASIA) in Victoria, funded by the Victoria Foundation through its Community Grants Program and by the Government of British Columbia through the Community Prosperity Fund, is a collaborative initiative that brings together Asian community groups in the region. Key collaborators include the Bayanihan Community Centre, the Victoria Chinatown Lioness Lions Club, the Victoria Filipino Canadian Association, and the Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society.

Building Community Capacity

To reach our first goal, we have formed a community of practice—a network of 12 organizations representing 10 different cultural groups. Over the spring and summer, members came together to identify capacity gaps and share ideas for addressing them.

Creating Intercultural Connections

In July and August, we partnered with the Downtown Residents’ Association to host two lively karaoke nights, featuring music, cultural activities, and delicious Asian food. These events brought together people from diverse backgrounds in a fun and welcoming space.
