It was a privilege to welcome Minister Rechie Valdez hosted in the Philippine Community Center. Minister Valdez, the first Filipino Canadian to serve in the Federal Cabinet, made history with her visit, marking an important moment for the Filipino community in British Columbia. The meeting was further enriched by the presence of MLA Will Greaves, a strong advocate for local cultural and community initiatives.
The event brought together Filipino Canadian local business owners, representatives from BCHS, VFCA, VFCCA, VFCSA, board members, and dedicated volunteers to share issues and opportunities affecting the community.

Development of the Bayanihan Cultural Housing Project
The meeting began with a discussion on the ongoing development of the Bayanihan Building, which aims to become a vibrant cultural and community hub for Filipinos and multicultural groups in Victoria and surrounding areas. Attendees shared their vision of creating a safe, inclusive, and culturally rooted space that fosters community connections, celebrates Filipino heritage, and provides essential services for newcomers, workers, and families.
Community housing was a key topic, addressing the growing need for affordable, accessible, and culturally sensitive accommodations for the Filipino and multicultural communities. Minister Valdez highlighted the importance of unity and strategic planning, encouraging the team to develop a comprehensive roadmap to present to federal partners for funding and policy support. She also recommended launching a community engagement survey to collect feedback, gauge interest, and identify the specific needs of the local Filipino population. This data will guide future proposals and demonstrate strong grassroots support.
Addressing Migrant and Caregiver Issues
The meeting also addressed challenges faced by migrant workers and caregivers in the region. Tita Annette shared firsthand accounts of the difficulties faced by migrants working in caregiving, retail, service industries, and other essential roles. Minister Valdez acknowledged these concerns with empathy, highlighting ongoing federal efforts to create pathways to Permanent Residency (PR) for caregivers. Both Minister Valdez and MLA Greaves affirmed their commitment to advocacy and accessibility, encouraging community members to reach out directly to their offices for personalized support and guidance.
Supporting Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses
Minister Valdez shared her inspiring journey from turning her passion for baking into a thriving business to becoming a federal cabinet minister. Her story reflects the resilience, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit within the Filipino community. She emphasized the importance of supporting small businesses, women entrepreneurs, and immigrant-owned ventures as a key driver for stronger, inclusive communities.
Participants also learned about available federal supports, including loans, mentorship, funding opportunities for diverse entrepreneurs, easier access to permits and licenses, reduced operational costs, tariff supports, global trade opportunities, and investments to boost tourism. Concerns about rising rents and operational costs in downtown areas were raised, with MLA Greaves noting that collaborative input from business owners and community members would be vital in shaping responsive, long-term solutions.
The visit of Minister Valdez served as an inspiring reminder of the importance of community, leadership, and collaboration. It reinforced the ongoing commitment to supporting the Filipino Canadian community in Victoria and highlighted opportunities for continued growth, engagement, and empowerment.
